There are slim pickings when it comes to finding a new place to live. Classes are still going on, which means you can’t fall behind while moving. You also have to be extremely organized and efficient so you can stay on top of everything.

You May Have to Find a Replacement

If you have leased an apartment off campus, you will most likely have to find someone to take over your lease. In real estate terms, this means you must sublet your lease. Most times you will be responsible for finding the new tenant and your landlord does not help you advertise.

This means that you will have to find ways to advertise your open room, conduct showings of your apartment and bedroom, and trust the person you are subletting your room to.

Make sure to interview the new prospective tenant and review their finances. Remember, if they fail to pay rent one month, you are held responsible for that money.

Pickings Are Slim

Unlike when you look for housing the year before you move in, there are some slim pickings when it comes to moving mid-semester. Most students already have their housing situations in place with their roommates and are living comfortably. That means there aren’t many choices for you.

You may get frustrated that you cannot find a new home that has everything you like. You cannot be as picky as you were before and may have to settle for some things. Keep this in mind when thinking about moving mid-semester.

You Don’t (Really) Get to Choose Your New Roommates

Some may argue that yes, you do get to choose your new roommates. Sure you do, but they come along with the apartment you decide to move into. You may find yourself in a situation where you love the roommates, but hate the apartment or vice versa.

You may have to move in with random strangers too. Sometimes this works out better than moving in with friends, though. Just keep an open mind and make sure to interview potential roommates to see if your living styles are compatible.

Don’t Get Distracted from School

Moving mid-semester means that you are spending a lot of time searching for a new place to live and for someone to take over your current spot. This can distract you from going to class or completing assignments. Though it’s important to have a good living situation, classes are just as important. Try not to get distracted and find a balance between school and apartment hunting.

Be Super Organized When Packing

Since you are moving mid-semester, you are probably still using most of your school books and have to keep track of your notes and papers. It’s important to be organized when packing up your belongings, especially if you know you have a test coming up.

This also goes for your clothing. If you know that you have an event coming up and already have an outfit picked out for it, make sure to remember where you packed it. Label your boxes with what is inside and prioritize what to open first.

Schedule Your Move

If you can help it, try to schedule your actual move for a mid-semester break. This could be over Thanksgiving or during spring break. That way you have some time to actually move and unpack.

Sometimes this is hard to swing, though. That just means you have to put a weekend aside to move into your new home. Ask your friends and family if they can help you out that weekend in advance to make your move easier.

Settle into Your New Home

Once you’ve found your replacement, a new place to live, and have officially moved in, it’s time to settle in! Unpack your belongings, get to know your new roommates, and make your new apartment home.

Become familiar with the new house or apartment and your new roommates’ schedules. Have a roommate dinner to get to know each other and learn any house rules they have in place. Add your own little touch to the living areas and redecorate your room. You’re home now!

Good Luck!

Moving mid-semester can be busy and stressful. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, though! Once you find someone to take over your lease and somewhere you would like to live, it’s all pretty easy from there. Just try not to get too distracted from your schoolwork while you move and you’ll be fine!
