Most college apartments come with a pretty standard set of furniture that can become a bit redundant once you’ve been living with it for several years. One way to change up your space without replacing that old furniture is by moving it around. While you may think that with only a limited amount of space in your apartment the furniture can only fit as it was when you first moved in, with proper planning and decluttering, you can transform your space to make more functional and fun.

1. Clean the Apartment Up

Before you start moving your furniture around, you’ll first need to do some cleaning to ensure that you have the maximum amount of space available when you go to rearrange everything. Clear away any extraneous clutter, and try to remove items from the furniture itself as well to make sure that it will be easy to move. It’s best to start with a clean slate, so the more you can clear out of your apartment, at least temporarily, the easier the process will be. In addition, when you’re moving furniture around, this tends to be a good time to think about reorganizing your apartment. Since you’ll likely be moving smaller items in addition to furniture anyway, think about organization and if there’s any way that you can improve it before you put everything back.

2. Measure

You may think that you can get away with just eyeballing the dimensions of your furniture and your apartment space to determine how you can put the space together. While this may be true to some degree, you can avoid mistakes and make the process much simpler on yourself just though taking measurements. If you’re unsure how much space your couch will take up in a certain place, for instance, measure it out so you can get an idea. This will save you the trouble of moving your furniture to a new spot, only to realize after you’ve undergone the heavy-lifting that it doesn’t quite fit. Make sure that when you’re measuring you take into account the amount of space that you’ll need on each side of your furniture pieces as well, so that you’ll have enough room to move freely around your apartment.

3. Find Inspiration

Before you start actually rearranging things, try to find some inspiration for how you want your apartment to look. Check out some websites or design magazines for ideas, whether they’re for apartments or for larger spaces. Even if you have a smaller space or less exciting furniture than what you’ll probably see in pictures, you’ll still be able to get some ideas in terms of how you can arrange different items and good ways to make your space seem bigger. You can even check out sites like Pinterest for some inspiration for college apartments specifically.

4. Move Larger Items First

When it comes to a college apartment, you’ll probably want to start by moving your couch and any larger armchairs, as these items will take up the most space and will be the most limited in terms of where you can position them. You’ll probably only want to move these items once, so plan what you want to do with them before you get started. Once you’ve got the larger items situated in their new spots, then you can easily bring in your smaller items, such as coffee tables, lamps, and side tables, and position them accordingly to complete the space.

5. Don’t Think Everything Has to be Against the Wall

Though you may be tempted to stick all of your furniture against the wall when you’re arranging it, in order to maximize your space, don’t get stuck thinking that this is the only way to go. You can also make your space feel inviting by angling your furniture to create a more defined space within your apartment. Though arranging your couch or chairs in this way may take up a bit more space than if they were flat against the wall, you should still have enough space left over so the room doesn’t feel too cramped. You can also use angled furniture to create a focal point within your apartment, and to bring more attention to a certain area of the room.

Many college students don’t take the time to think about how they can rearrange their furniture after they move into a new apartment, and as a result, don’t try to improve their space. However, finding the perfect furniture setup for your apartment can make a big difference in the overall feel of your apartment, as well as in terms of its functionality. Rearranging your furniture pieces is also a great way to change things up if you ever find yourself bored with the way your apartment looks, so if you find yourself feeling like a change, keep these tips in mind as you rework your space.
